Janet Read

 Oil and Acrylic Paintings

"My current body of work presents 'landscapes of consciousness' from a month’s immersion in high Arctic geography. I visited Pond Inlet, Grise Fjord and areas of Devon, Philpotts and Ellesmere Islands

"Paintings reference the artist’s 'being' in the natural world and encounters with those for whom the high north is both wild and home. My paintings are reflective of my personal experience, always aware that Innuit voices must be heard to tell their own stories and history. My work tells the story of a visitor, a sojourner to a remote and sublime region of Canada. "

Janet Read is a painter, musician and poet who grew up near the shores of Lake Simcoe. The artist has sought the water’s edge ever since.

Residencies in Newfoundland and Ireland, and travels in Norway, Iceland, and Scotland, have allowed her continued access to the sea, leading to a lifetime investigation of water as a metaphor for strength and fragility.

Janet's work has been shown in commercial and public galleries including the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, with a catalogue, Ocean as vessel, essays by David Aurandt. Four large-scale paintings were shown in the Intro Gallery as part of Colour, In Theory at the Varley Gallery in Unionville until January 25 to May 4, 2014. Janet Read: An abstract practice, at the Art Gallery of Peterborough, was curated by Carla Garnet. 2015 saw exhibitions at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, Christensen Fine Art in Peterborough, Propeller Gallery and Navillus Gallery in Toronto. Paintings can be found in public and private collections, including the Archives of the Ontario Government.

Upcoming exhibitions include the Propeller Art Gallery in Toronto, Oct. 28 - Nov. 15, 2020.
